The Official Waikato Law "Fuel Guide": Top Campus Eats Ranked by Jelle

Image
If there is one thing that fuels a study session in the Law Library or keeps you going through back-to-back lectures, it’s good food. I’ve spent enough time on the ground at the Hamilton Campus to know exactly where to find the best kai. Whether you’re a first-year at the Hamilton campus or a seasoned LLB student, here is my definitive ranking of the best food spots at the University of Waikato . 1. Sue’s Café: The Gold Standard The sushi triangles and Korean specialities here are unbeatable. It’s fresh, fast, and the perfect "grab-and-go" fuel between lectures. If you haven't been yet, you’re missing out on a campus staple. 2. Food Paradise: The Curry Wrap This is a local legend for a reason. There is nothing quite like curry, chips, and sauce, all wraped in a naan to get you through a cold Hamilton afternoon. It’s heavy, it’s delicious, and it’s the ultimate comfort food for law students. 3. Bongo Café: Teriyaki Chicken Bowl When you want something that feels a bit mor...

The Slippery Slope: Why Showing Up is Your #1 Study Hack for First Year

Image
Welcome to Te Piringa - Faculty of Law ! Whether you are studying at the Hamilton or Tauranga campus, the first year of an LLB is an exciting transition. But among the new-found freedom of university life, there is one trap that catches even the best students: the "just this once" lecture skip. It sounds harmless, but in law school, skipping lectures can quickly become addictive—and that’s a habit that is hard to break. The "Skipping Addiction" It starts small. You’re tired, it’s raining at Gate 7, or you’ve got a 9:00 AM start. You tell yourself, "I’ll just watch the recording later." The problem? Once you realize no one is checking the roll, skipping becomes a "reward" that your brain starts to crave. One missed lecture becomes two, two becomes a week, and suddenly you are staring at 15 hours of Panopto recordings three days before your mid-term. The stress of "catching up" is far worse than the effort of showing up. Why Live Lect...

More Than a Degree: Why Student Leadership is Your Secret Weapon at University

Image
Starting your journey at the University of Waikato , whether you’re based at the Hamilton or Tauranga campus, is a major milestone. While mastering your LLB or law qualification is the priority, what you do between lectures can often be the deciding factor in your future career. In the competitive New Zealand legal landscape , "what you know" gets you the interview, but "who you know" and "how you lead" gets you the job. 1. Building a Community (Finding Your Whānau) University is a massive transition. Joining a student association or a rōpū is the fastest way to turn a large campus into a supportive community. Associations foster an inclusive environment where students can connect over shared goals. For many, these groups become a "home away from home," providing a sense of whānaungatanga that makes the academic pressure of law school much easier to manage. 2. Networking: The Hidden Job Market One of the biggest benefits of joining a socie...
