The Official Waikato Law "Fuel Guide": Top Campus Eats Ranked by Jelle

If there is one thing that fuels a study session in the Law Library or keeps you going through back-to-back lectures, it’s good food.

I’ve spent enough time on the ground at the Hamilton Campus to know exactly where to find the best kai. Whether you’re a first-year at the Hamilton campus or a seasoned LLB student, here is my definitive ranking of the best food spots at the University of Waikato.

1. Sue’s Café: The Gold Standard

The sushi triangles and Korean specialities here are unbeatable. It’s fresh, fast, and the perfect "grab-and-go" fuel between lectures. If you haven't been yet, you’re missing out on a campus staple.

2. Food Paradise: The Curry Wrap

This is a local legend for a reason. There is nothing quite like curry, chips, and sauce, all wraped in a naan to get you through a cold Hamilton afternoon. It’s heavy, it’s delicious, and it’s the ultimate comfort food for law students.

3. Bongo Café: Teriyaki Chicken Bowl

When you want something that feels a bit more like a "real meal," the Teriyaki Chicken bowl at Bongo is the move. It’s consistent, filling, and always hits the spot.

4. UniMart: The "Public Law Starter Pack"

Sometimes you just need a quick fix before the Public Law lecture starts. A Up and Go and a Red Bull from UniMart is the unofficial breakfast of champions at the Faculty of Law.

5. Kahurangi: Iced Latte & Spicy Eggs

For those mornings when you actually have time to sit down, Kahurangi is the spot. Their iced latte is top-tier, and the spicy eggs on toast will wake you up faster than any legal theory lecture.

6. The Special Mention: Kīngitanga Day Hāngī

While it’s not an everyday occurrence, the hāngī at Kahurangi on Kīngitanga Day deserves its own category. It’s a highlight of the university calendar and a great way to experience the inclusive community we value here at Te Piringa.

Why Food Matters for Te Piringa Events

As outlined in our Society Constitution, our objective is to enrich the experience of law students. While we focus on professional and academic networking, we know that social connections often happen over a meal.

Supporting our local campus vendors is part of building a strong Te Piringa - Faculty of Law community!
